Why Automation Amplifies Bad Data

Automation doesn't evaluate data quality — it processes whatever it receives. A workflow that routes leads based on a field that's 40% empty will misroute 40% of leads, every time, without error messages. A workflow that triggers follow-up tasks based on a stage field that's inconsistently populated will create tasks for the wrong deals and miss the right ones. The automation is working exactly as designed. The problem is the data it's working with.

The Correct Sequence

Automation should be built after the data foundation is clean — not as a substitute for cleaning it. The correct sequence is: audit the data, standardize the fields the automation will depend on, validate that those fields are populated consistently, then build the workflow. Auditing Existing Automation

If you already have automation running on bad data, the audit process runs in reverse: identify every workflow, map the fields it depends on, and assess the data quality of those fields. Any workflow running on fields with significant data quality issues should be paused until the underlying data is corrected.
